“Why are you so angry?”

How about — why do you try to hold my anger above me, as if it strips me of any credibility? why do you have to dangle my unhappiness in front of me? I’ve become the most ultimately unamerican I can be — I’m an unhappy brown girl caught in a white man’s world. I’m pretty sure if you grew up being stared at or called a sandn***er you wouldn’t be too thrilled either. If you had to wonder whether or not your masjid was going to be shot up or if your mother was going to get cussed out at…

Girl Code, Responsibility, Accountability and In Lak Ech

I didn’t believe my friend when she was raped. …… The last few years in Tucson have been a struggle to survive. With the battles in our communities and legislation targeting brown people of color on indigenous land – we have nearly killed each other and the work and the fight and the fighting has made us all sick – susto. It deserves writing that will never end now that it has started. Through it all, I now reflect on two moments when I know I fucked up. I monumentally fucked up and hurt other women. When it first happened,…

Reflection… Correction… Direction…

Here’s the thing — a little more clarification is necessary since it seems that the confusion continues. First of all — this is not a competition for fans or views or reads. When we set out to launch malintZine on December 21, 2012 we had a vision of offering an anonymous space for women to speak their truths. Truths that had been silenced for too long. MalintZine has been and will continue to be a radically safe space that will ferociously protect the anonymity of our authors. But malintZine and her authors are not just the women who you’ve seen…

de/romantic revolutions

I remember the first time I went to the MEChA meeting he was there to the side with his Ché mane sad eyes and I liked him                                                                         (no, you don’t understand) he’s a beautiful brown man he reminds me of my brother lost, rocky childhood, angry, charismatic, womanizer but wants to be a lawyer or politician do right by his people                                                                         (his mother) first time he holds my hand, we’re at the movies watching motorcycle diaries his sweaty palm, let’s go stares and for a moment I imagine revolutionary love                                                                         (wack right?) that’s when he tells me…

Letters From the Palestinian Border

It would feel like if you ate Gorged yourself in front of a hungry person. But the starving one is the one who cooked the meal, Grew the garden, Nurtured the abundance And then they just took it. Ate from another’s plate. For 63 years.   This is the border between Palestine and Lebanon Between Palestine and us. Between you and I. This is what the border must look like To the thirsty To the hungry – Dry, cracking Earth where I stand Dying, withered weeds Trash. Zionist wrappers. Empty Bottles of water And then- My eyes feast on the…

Night Walk

The light dims in the sky as my endless calls are met with no answer. After calling everyone possible, I realize the best idea is to start my long walk. Seven miles from a location I am unfamiliar with isn’t settling well in my stomach. Before I leave, I notice a rideless friend and ask her if she wants to join me. She agrees and we nervously start our voyage down the path of dark corners, empty streets, abandoned sidewalks and the hungry animals of the night. Darkness falls as we walk; everything becomes unfamiliar and the shadows transform our…

Grandfather

To My Dead Grandfather,   I used to wish I could have met you Dreamed of you reading me bedtime stories and of my potential love for you After I found out the truth all I have dreamed about is my regret your Death wasn’t torturous enough to suit your crimes Physical damage will not satisfy my need  Piss on your soul; mutilate the fibers of the cross-stitch that Holds your two-face together   I dreamed I could have been there and watched you Die. And I wanted to be the one to do it. To have killed you. Slowly, carefully, methodically with a distinct…

Take It All Back

Women with the courage to fight taught me how to take it all back Your rape cannot take my pleasure Your hate cannot take my love You war cannot take my peace Your ignorance can not dull my light My voice calls out and is echoed We come together bound in women-centered community We are safe because we promote women as leaders in all sectors and live as leaders Leaders who know their strengths Leaders who turn to community for support when we are weak We stand together and up in all our actions Our lives lived and daily choices…
